Health & Medical Safety Lead - NBA

While Basketball Operations runs the league’s on-court activities, other departments manage relationships with television and digital media partners, develop marketing partnerships with some of the world’s most recognizable companies, oversee the licensing of NBA merchandise, and handle a wide range of responsibilities that drive the NBA’s success. Position Summary: The Health & Medical Safety Lead will report directly to SVP, Medical Affairs to design and implement health and safety programs for the NBA domestically and internationally, based upon governmental, federal and local health and safety guidelines. This position is responsible for assisting with operations and compliance designed to protect and promote employee health and safety. Major Responsibility:

  • Support SVP, Medical Affairs in building a proactive and positive safety culture for all NBA employees; implement US health and safety (HS) programs and policies based on federal, state and local health and safety guidelines and OSHA to protect NBA employees from HS hazards and risks and mitigate organizational impact in the workplace

  • Coordinate and triage COVID-19 response procedures, while applying lessons learned from COVID-19 towards the design and implementation of best practice protocols for other emerging infectious diseases

  • The position calls for some degree of medical encounters and the provision of medical advice to NBA employees.

  • Liaise with Risk Management and Event Medicine in tracking potential domestic and international infectious disease threats that may have an impact of US and Regional offices, NBA arenas, international events, employee health, or facility healthy and safety protocols

  • Monitor assigned COVID-19 testing program and vet leading technology for consideration of incorporation into the NBA's COVID-19 surveillance program

  • Actively engage in the promotion and modeling of HS policies

  • Serve as the designated point of contact for the Regional Offices and facilities personnel on League HS initiatives relating to health and safety at NBA games

  • Audit League office, US Team and Arenas as well as NBA events (including but not limited to All-Star Game, NBA Finals, Summer League) to assess effectiveness of Health & Safety protocols while identifying weaknesses or risks. Proactively develop and implement corrective action

  • Responsible for reviewing and monitoring AED certification and compliance program, any AED product recalls, reporting to appropriate regulatory authority when an AED is deployed on-site, and ensuring AEDs are up to date, functional, and ready for use

  • Responsible for monitoring the usage of medical air transport and emergency evacuations in accordance with NBA protocols.

  • Responsible for the management and maintenance of key in-building programs, including but not limited to: CPR, AED, and first aid training and certification for NJ and NY

  • Participate in and contribute to advice on health and safety protocols impacting the NBA offices and league employees. Align with internal partners, including but not limited to Facilities, Human Resources, Legal, Risk Management, Events Technology and Security

  • Contribute to maximizing a broader medical reach and impact across departments and throughout the organization. Perform research and literature reviews, draft & edit manuscripts and documents, assist with the creation of league-wide HS content for distribution

  • Prepare PPT presentations, participate in discussions regarding medical policies, protocols and procedures. Conduct special studies, compliance activities, and other safety-related support, as requested. This may include, but may not be limited to research and recommendations on use of personal protective equipment, wearables, and other health and medical devices and applications

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Minimum 8+ years of work experience in the medical and health fields, with a strong understanding of procedures and standards in public health

  • Flexibility to travel domestically and internationally, as needed

  • Preference for those with employee/occupation health experience, bonus if experience in industrial operations and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Strong understanding of international, federal, state and local regulations and requirements

  • Relevant knowledge of sampling methods and mathematical skills Ability to connect with Senior Level Executives both inside and outside the organization

  • Experience working and multi-tasking in a multifaceted, fast-paced environment

  • Flexibility to work outside of normal or routine work hours - if needed or as required

Education:

  • MD/DO, PA, NP, preferred
