The Northwell Health System (formerly the North Shore – Long Island Jewish Health System) is comprised of 24 hospitals covering a wide geographic area extending from its primary base at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island westwards to Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan and eastwards to Peconic Bay Medical Center near the Hamptons - Long Island’s eastern end. The Neurosurgery residency is based out of North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Cohen Children’s Medical Center and Lenox Hill Hospital. We have 28 full-time neurosurgeons, 9 Neuro Critical Care specialists and several research faculty members at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research - our research wing. The main characteristics of our program are a large and diverse neurosurgical case volume, a robust teaching program, early surgical hands-on experience, a wide variety of research opportunities, and a very collegial relationship between the residents and the faculty. Residents are expected to be academically productive and are provided with the financial support to present their research at local and national conferences. The Elmezzi Graduate School at the world-renowned Feinstein Institute for Medical Research allows residents an opportunity to work toward a PhD right on campus. Our nearby affiliate institution, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, also welcomes resident participation in basic science research. Our residents are accepted into the most competitive fellowship programs upon graduation. We have the spectrum of neurosurgical technologies including Radiosurgery and Endovascular Neurosurgery. Northwell is home to the Center for Learning and Innovation and the Bioskills Lab – unique teaching facilities that offer various course and simulation models. Our home base at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York is less than 40 minutes away from the heart of Manhattan and less than a half-hour from LaGuardia and Kennedy airports. We are close to Long Island’s North Shore – the setting of The Great Gatsby -- and to the South Shore beaches, which are considered to be some of the most beautiful in the country. Additionally, our location is very close to world-class shopping, luxury and family-friendly hotels, and top restaurants. Long Island offers year-round activities such as swimming, hiking, horseback riding, biking, shopping, and a variety of cultural programs. The addition of Lenox Hill Hospital to our program also provides you with the Manhattan experience, not to mention superb clinical exposure.
